There’s no doubt the songs of WW2 played a pivotal role in keeping the nations spirits alive during the blitz. While classics like: Land of Hope and Glory and The White Cliffs of Dover helped bond a strong sense of unity and togetherness against the common enemy, satirical songs by artists such as George Formby and Flanagan & Allan provided a moment of laughter even in the darkest times. PRIVATE TOMMY leads the charge.. Don't panic, don't panic!!!
It’s often said that the heart of any community lies in its folk songs of the past. They are “the songs of the people, sung by the common people”. Songs that simply emerged over a long period of time, often with no-known writer or composer! Many contain historical accounts, such as tales of toil, hardship and woe. All of which apply to our beloved North East but don’t forget "the flat-cap" or "the tab behind the lug!" Or the: whippets, ferrets, black pudding and the lashings of mushy peas!!! "Thrrrrrrrppp#!!"
There’s no business, like showbusiness..
Ever since Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers waltzed onto the silver screen in 1934, followed by Judy Garland in the musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz a couple of years later, the public’s love of Broadway-inspired musicals has been insatiable. Cool, suave and sophisticated (or so he tells us!) Scottish actor/international playboy and (ahem!) self-confessed serial philanderer JOCK McSTRAP guides participants through the glitzy world of Hollywood. But can you match the movie to the song? Hic!
Rumour has it, Elvis passed away in 1977. Rumour also has it that Elvis was a fanatical Sunderland AFC supporter and honorary Mackem! And there’s a guy who works down the chip shop in Roker who’s an absolute dead ringer. Is he, or isn’t he? Only one thing’s for certain, the man, the legend and the music live on, deep in the heart of Roker. "Wise men say, only fools rush in - Lord Have Mercy!"
Emerging from the post war gloom of the 1950’s the teddy boys (or “teds” as they were also known) were Britain’s first teen-subculture. Inspired by American rock n’ roll music and the clothes of Edwardian "Dandies", the teds style was razor sharp and their flamboyance and menacing antics frightened the life out of middle-England!
Oi, what you lookin’ at?
All aboard for Wally's Magical Mystery Tour!
From the hippy communes of Woodstock to the blood-stained beaches of Brighton, the 60’s produced an array of musical styles including, beat groups, psychedelia and Motown. Not to mention the occasional mind-altering, hallucinogenic drug!
Make Love - Not War. "YEAH BABY!"
The pearly kings and queens are an iconic image of London. Originating from the mid-1800’s they are easily recognisable by their distinctive and elaborate suits covered in mother-of-pearl buttons. Famous for their cockney banter and being the life and soul of any social gathering, no partys complete without a bit of "Knees-up Mother Brown, Roll Out the Barrell and Maybe it's because I'm a...Northener"(???)
Luvly-jubbly!
Special events are always in-demand, however our SING-ALONG-A-CHRISTMAS’ special is extremely popular and an early reservation is advised as places are limited. Continuing our philosophy of reviving past memories, we begin our Christmas journey by transporting participants back to dreaded "school nativity" play! Yep, it's tea-towels on heads for the lads, and a tinselly halo and angel-wings for the girls. Well, it is...CHRISTMASSS!!!!
Includes: traditional hymns, carols and everybody's Christmas favourites!
This category often raises a few eyebrows. However, these simple childhood favourites never fail to put a massive smile of the faces of our participants. Not only are individuals able to recall the lyrics and melodies with relative ease, they can often recall singing these same songs as children, as parents and as grand-parents too. If You're Happy And You Know It (clap your hands), Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By-The-Sea and Knick Knack Paddy Whack give a dog a bone, it's fun and laughter all the way home!
